Even if you have the right kind of self-storage facility located in the most appropriate location in your city, and you are ready to pack and stack away those goods, remember that there are a lot restrictions on the goods you can store. Much as you like to put them away, and the self-storage companies are pretty flexible on the items that its customers store, there are numerous items not allowed by law to be stored and no reputed company knowingly will store these for you. Remember, it is a legal offence to store unwarranted items. To be completely safe from any legal entanglements in future, it is best to check with the storage provider in case of any doubt or apprehension about any item which you wish to store. So before you start packing here are some words of caution on non-storable items:
Hazardous and inflammable items are not allowed to be stored. Accidents like gas explosions, fuel or fireworks and other mishaps are to be avoided at any cost, since you are not the only person who has his goods in storage. The facility is providing space to many customers like you.
All fuel tanks including the lawnmower have to be emptied before storing.
Pets and animals are not allowed to be kept inside any self-storage unit. There are many people who believe that storage units can be used to feed and raise animals but remember this is completely illegal.
There are also some people who believe that some food items can be kept in self-storage units till such times that relocation is complete and they are settled in their new home. No food, fruits or plants are allowed inside a self-storage unit, even if it is for a very short time.
No reputed self-storage company will allow its customer to store illegal or stolen goods in his storage facility. This activity can land both the storage provider as well as you behind bars.
While some self-storage providers allow you to store guns and rifles, but universally this allowance is not applicable. It depends on individual policies of the company. Regarding storing these items, make sure that you unload them in secured and locked containers within the storage space.
While some self-storage providers will permit you to store expensive jewelry, most will request you to prove the proof of purchase along with self-storage insurance policy. The same rule applies to storage of precious stones, rare coins and other expensive metallic items.
Items which are fragrant are usually not allowed. Since this causes significant and prominent odors in the premises, these items are usually not allowed.
Any toxic material or chemical which may cause damage on spilling, or explode will not be allowed by any reputed storage provider.
Thus, before you pack your favorite perfume or your gas lighters into the packing box, remember the above restrictions. After all these rules are not just for the safety for your goods alone, it is meant for safety for other goods as well as the facility itself.
