Self Service Movers.

So you have decided not to hire the services of a professional moving company but do the moving yourself. Self moving is undertaken by many individuals and not a problem at all if you know how to go about it. One of the most essential pre-requisite for self-moving is hiring a truck. A common moving truck or a rental van is all you need. Of course the size and capacity of the truck would depend on the volume of your consignment. If you are not too sure of the size of truck that will be required for transporting your goods, you could always call a truck rental company who can inspect your shippable goods and advise you on the size accordingly. Truck rentals are easily available at service stations or even equipment rental stores. These are excellent vehicles for small moves and all self-moving customers usually hire trucks as well as moving labor who help them to load and unload the packed goods. The only thing you will have to do is procure packing materials and pack your goods yourself.

Self moving is a very viable option when the load is not too large and you are not likely to carry too many valuables. Self moving is also a good option if the distance between the two points of travel is not very huge. This consignment then becomes more manageable without any high risk of damage, breakage, etc. When you are thinking of hiring a truck for self-moving, remember the size should not be very large. One of the most common problems faced by self-moving customers is that they land up taking a rental truck which is either too big or too small for their needs.

When driving a large truck along the high way, remember that you will have to own a special driving permit. This is very different from the driving license you have for driving a car or a van. The area through which the truck will be traveling may have special rules which apply to large trucks. So, knowing the rules of your home state and your destination state will not be enough, you will have to be familiar with the jurisdictional requirements of the land through which the truck will be passing.

A thorough knowledge of the truck that you will be driving is of course essential. There are various aspects of the power steering, brakes, automatic transmission, etc which you need to get completely familiar with. Remember, these are very different from the car you are used to driving and requires a completely different set of handling. Your driving skills for a truck also has to be adequate like changing lanes, becoming aware of overhangs and other road barriers which may not have created any problem with your car. Going on reverse could be a particular problem with large trucks and you should practice this before taking it out on the road. You need to familiarize yourself with the gauges before you hire it from the truck rental company. How to check the fluid level readings is another aspect which you need to learn. Even simple maneuvers like taking a turn may be difficult as large trucks would do these functions very slowly. Driving during night and inclement weather is not recommended for new drivers. You need to check the mirrors often make sure that there is enough room when changing lanes. Driving more 8 hours a day is also not recommended.
